“ダンジョン”という言葉や設定はいつごろ日本に定着したのだろう？これを解き明かすには、ダンジョン＆ドラゴンズ、ウィザードリィからドラゴンクエストへ、それから連綿と続くRPGの歴史とともに、『指輪物語』から『ロードス島戦記』そして『ダンジョンに出会いを求めるのは間違っているだろうか』へと展開していく、日本のゲーム、ライトノベル、マンガ、アニメといったサブカル的表現の”ダンジョン”を探索しなければならないだろう。そこには時代も国も超えて続く想像力と好奇心の展開と生み出された数多の作品という、とてつもなく楽しい数々の冒険が待っているはず。

『ダンジョン飯』は2014年に連載がスタート、2023年に完結した九井諒子の初の長編作品。トールマンで冒険者のライオスは、ダンジョン探索中にドラゴンに襲われ、妹のファリンがレッドドラゴン（炎竜）に食べられてしまう。荷物もお金も仲間も失ったライオスは、パーティに残ってくれたファリンの魔法学校での友人であり古代魔術を研究するハーフエルフのマルシル、毒舌だが解錠の専門家で現状把握に長けるハーフフットのチルチャックと共に再びダンジョンに入る。そこで長い間ダンジョンで自給自足を実践してきた、魔物食に詳しいドワーフのセンシという強い味方を得る。そしてファリンが消化されてしまう前に炎竜を見つけて救い出すため、ライオスたちは食糧をダンジョンの中で現地調達しながらダンジョンの深奥を目指す、というストーリー。この『ダンジョン飯』によって、“ダンジョン”がありエルフやノーム、オークやコボルトなど異種族がいて魔法や魔物が併存する異世界モノというジャンルと、スライムやマンドレイク、水棲馬やジャイアントクラーケンのような魔物を食材に、読み手の知っている調理法でしかも馴染みある料理をつくるというグルメマンガのジャンルが邂逅したのだ。連載開始からたった10年だけれども、日本のグルメマンガの歴史のなかでも、異世界モノの流れの中でも記念碑的な作品と言える。

『ダンジョン飯』は異世界モノ、グルメマンガのジャンルに分類されるが、物語と読者をさらに惹きつける描写は九井諒子ならでは。『ダンジョン飯』は竜に食べられてしまった妹を救出することから始まるが、食べるという人間の三大欲求の一つを大きな生物の環をベースに語りながら、マルシルが願うことやなぜセンシがダンジョンにいるのか、ライオスの旅の仲間だけでなく、ダンジョンのために故郷や親を失ったカブルーや欲望にとりこまれ迷宮の王になったミスルンなど、それぞれの過去やダンジョンとの因縁を絶妙なボリュームと濃さで描いて物語の要所に配置、一方でより大きな人の欲望というテーマを描いて『ダンジョン飯』というちょっと怖いけれどとても魅力的な物語の世界を九井諒子は描き出した。2024年1月からTRIGGER制作のアニメーションが放送されていて、『ダンジョン飯』のマンガで表現されたクスっと笑える、それぞれのキャラクターの行動や気持ちの描写がどこまでフォローされるのか、宝探しのような感覚で見るのも楽しいだろう。

Dungeon Mechi (Delicious in Dungeon) by Ryoko Kui

When did the term “Dungeon” first take root in Japan? To find out, we must explore the “Dungeons” of the Japanese subculture of games, light novels, manga and anime. There are numerous adventures waiting for us, with a tremendous amount of imagination, curiosity, and works of art that have transcended time and country.

Dungeon Meshi is a work by Ryoko Kui, which began in 2014 and was completed in 2023. Laios was attacked by a dragon while exploring the dungeon, and his sister Farin was eaten by the red dragon. Having lost his luggage, money and companions, Laios re-enters the dungeon with Marcille and Chilchuck, who stayed behind in the party. There, they find a great support in Senshi, who has practised self-sufficiency in the dungeon for a long time and is an expert on monster food. In order to find and save Falin before she is digested, they go deep into the dungeon, gathering food locally in the dungeon. With Dungeon Mei, the otherworldly manga genre, in which dungeons, different races, magic and monsters coexist, and the gourmet manga genre, in which familiar dishes are prepared using monsters as ingredients, encountered each other. Although it has only been serialised for 10 years, it is a monumental work in the history of Japanese gourmet manga and in the flow of otherworldly manga.

Although Dungeon Meshi begins with the rescue of Falin, it tells one story about the desire to eat, based on a large circle of beings, and places it at the key points of the story, describing the characters’ pasts and their connection to the dungeon, while also depicting the theme of a larger human desire.  The anime has been broadcast since January 2024. It will be fun to see how the chuckles and the depiction of each character’s actions and feelings expressed in the manga will be depicted in the anime, as if you were on a treasure hunt.
